BRITISH STANDARDS

There are many British Standards and Codes of Practice which relate to all aspects of the asphalt industry, some of these of course relate to the special needs of the mastic asphalt user. The earliest standards for roofing and paving date from the 1940's as BS 988 - Mastic Asphalt for Roofing, and BS 1447- Mastic Asphalt for Roads and Footways.

Since these standards first appeared there have been periodic revisions and additions to the details. The current Standards in use in the mastic asphalt industry are:

BS 1446:1973 Specification for mastic asphalt (natural rock asphalt fine aggregate) for roads and footways
BS 1447:1988 Specification for mastic asphalt (limestone fine aggregate) for roads, footways and pavings in building
BS 5284:1993 Methods of sampling and testing mastic asphalt used in building and civil engineering
BS 6925:1988 Specification for mastic asphalt for building and civil engineering (limestone aggregate) This standard now includes the old BS988 Mastic Aspahlt roofing standard which has been withdrawn.
BS 8204-5:1994 Screeds, bases and in-situ floorings. Code of practice for mastic asphalt underlays and wearing surfaces
BS 8218:1998 Code of practice for mastic asphalt roofing
BS EN 12970:2000 Mastic asphalt for waterproofing. Definitions, requirements and test methods

QUALITY ASSURANCE

This is a world wide scheme, administered within the UK by the British Standards Institution, which ensure quality is maintained in all aspects of a companies operations, whether it is a manufacturing or service industry.

An ISO9000 registered company will have been inspected by a BSI registered auditor who will ensure that all aspects of its operations are thoroughly documented and controlled.

Once registration is achieved, the auditors(s) will return, normally twice yearly, for routine surveillance visits. These  examinations ensure that the management system continues to operate effectively.

In 1989/1990 Rock Asphalte were the first mastic asphalt company to achieve Quality assurance to parts 1 & 2 and are the only mastic asphalt company to be Quality Assured  in both contracting and manufacturing
